RestoringVision: bringing clear sight in wartime Ukraine

RestoringVision, a global nonprofit dedicated to equitable access to vision care, has partnered with the International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development ” to provide free near-vision eyeglasses and eye screenings in high-risk areas of Ukraine. Volunteer doctors travel into conflict-affected communities, even during harsh winter conditions and power outages, restoring people’s ability to read, work, and manage daily life while also detecting serious eye diseases such as glaucoma. RestoringVision: bringing clear sight – and hope – to people in wartime Ukraine

RestoringVision is a leading global nonprofit dedicated to creating equitable access to vision services and eyeglasses for people living on low incomes worldwide. Late last year, RestoringVision launched a partnership with the Ukraine-based International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development” to reach people whose lives have been upended by war and who no longer have access to basic eye care. Together, we are delivering near-vision eyeglasses and mobile eye screenings to communities facing daily conflict and disruption.

In its LinkedIn post, RestoringVision describes how our volunteer doctors conduct mobile vision screenings in high-risk areas in and around Kyiv and other regions. They travel directly into affected communities, often during periods of freezing temperatures, prolonged power cuts, and, in some areas, complete loss of electricity. Despite these harsh conditions, the teams continue their missions week after week, providing people with near-vision glasses that immediately restore their ability to read, work, and manage everyday tasks. At the same time, doctors use these visits to screen for serious eye diseases such as glaucoma and to guide patients to specialists who can offer timely, potentially sight-saving treatment.

RestoringVision emphasises that in the most difficult moments, vision becomes more than sight – it becomes hope. Through this partnership, thousands of pairs of near-vision eyeglasses have already been delivered since January, helping people maintain their livelihoods, continue learning, and stay independent despite displacement and uncertainty. The cooperation also strengthens our broader medical aid programmes by integrating vision care into our support for vulnerable adults and older people in Ukraine.
