World Sight Day 2026 in Ukraine

Every year, on the second Thursday of October, the world observes World Sight Day — a moment to focus attention on eye care that is accessible, available and affordable for everyone. The growing global movement is led by advocates around the world. In fact, it is encouraging governments and decision-makers to listen more closely than ever. As a result, they are recognising that early detection of vision problems is critical for educational opportunities. Furthermore, it is critical for future economic potential.

This year, the International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development” (ICF) — the largest NGO partner of RestoringVision in Ukraine — is launching the “Better Vision – Better Life” Challenge. It will run from 15 September to 8 October 2026. The challenge will culminate on World Sight Day.

What we are doing

Over the course of three weeks, the International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development” will provide free eye screenings in places where decisions are made. These include government institutions, public authorities and public venues.

Why it matters

In partnership with RestoringVision, the International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development” provides reading glasses to people with presbyopia. Presbyopia is an age-related condition. It makes it difficult to read documents, view a phone screen or help a child with homework.

Since the beginning of 2026, this partnership has provided nearly 70,000 pairs of glasses to people across war-affected Ukraine. Teams of volunteer optometrists and ophthalmologists are also reaching new communities across the regions of Ukraine every day.

Hearing from decision-makers

Following each screening, we invite local decision-makers — including business leaders, community representatives, social workers, doctors and educators — to share what clear vision means to them personally. In addition, we invite them to share how the work of the International Charitable Foundation “Contribution to Medicine Development” and RestoringVision is improving people’s quality of life.
